Faith, in our culture, is used to refer to a number of things, but the Word of God tells us that it is the “substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen”. There are those that have put their faith in God (who they cannot see) and in His ability to take them to Heaven, (a place they have not seen). However, it is not the majority who truly put their faith in Christ to handle the daily details of their lives. We, as humans, are smart, and we make plans, strategize, and chase dreams, often times without ever considering God’s plan for our lives. Whether it’s college choices, career choices, or the simple pursuits of our lives, Satan makes it easy for us to become engrossed in our agenda, which is often times a very good one, so that we forget to go to
God for His blueprint for our lives. How tragic it would be to get to the end of our lives, only to find that we lived a great life, but we didn’t live the life He created us to live.
His plans for each of us look different, but one common denominator for all of our journeys is faith. If He tells us that we cannot please Him without faith, we shouldn’t be surprised when the path He calls us to follow Him on is a sea of faith that we must constantly sail. It’s an adventure that is exciting and filled with great anticipation, when our eyes are on Him, but it can also be daunting and overwhelming, when our eyes fall to the task, calling, or circumstances we see. For me, it can become daunting as I look at other people’s journey and the storms they endure and I wonder if mine will look the same. The fear of the “what if’s” can quickly skew my perspective, but God is always there to reveal Himself and remind me that no matter the “what if’s” that may become a reality in my journey, He is faithful. This truth spurs us on as we face another year, one with great national deficits, a ministry calendar to continue to fill, a treasured marriage and children to invest in, and souls to be won.
We do not know just how far our nation will fall off this so called “fiscal cliff”, but we know God is already there. We do not know exactly what events will fill the open dates on our ministry calendar, places where souls need to hear the Truth of the Gospel, but we know that He is already working that out. We do not yet know where the monies for the 2013 ministry budget will all come from, but we do know that God is the Owner of all things and He is able. We have great hope and move forward, by faith, into yet another year, and we do so with great anticipation for all that He has planned for us. We can look back on our journey and see His hand, His protection, and His incredible provision, and this enables us to look forward to another year with confidence in His ability to, not only carry us to eternity, but to manage the details of our everyday lives.
It is said that the African impala can jump to a height of over 10 feet and cover a distance of greater than 30 feet. Yet, these magnificent creatures can be kept in an enclosure in any zoo with a 3-foot wall. The animals will not jump if they cannot see where their feet will fall. Faith is the ability to trust what we cannot see, and with faith we are freed from the flimsy enclosures of life that only fear allows to entrap us. Although we cannot see exactly where our feet will fall throughout 2013, we firmly believe that God already has every step mapped out for us and we deeply desire to draw even nearer to Him each day, so as not to miss one single detail of His amazing plan, knowing that regardless of what we may not be able to see, we can rest in the reality that He is already there!
